Private Music Lessons at Sweet Music Studio
Your Music. Your Pace. Your Musical Journey.
Whether you're picking up an instrument for the first time, returning to music after years away, or looking to take your playing to another level, Sweet Music Studio offers personalized, one-on-one instruction designed around your interests, abilities, and musical goals.
I'm Adam Sweet, a musician, composer, and music educator with more than 45 years of experience performing, recording, and teaching. My background includes classical music, bluegrass, traditional Irish and Celtic music, klezmer, folk, and other musical traditions.
I've always believed that music education should be enjoyable, practical, and personal. Not everyone wants to become a professional musician. Some people want to play with friends, join a local jam session, explore a musical tradition, or simply enjoy the satisfaction of learning something new.
Whatever brings you to music, that's where we'll begin.
What Instruments Do I Teach?
Sweet Music Studio offers private instruction in:
Violin and Fiddle: Classical foundations, traditional fiddle styles, bowing techniques, intonation, repertoire, and musical expression.
Mandolin: Bluegrass, Celtic, folk, traditional melodies, flatpicking, chords, rhythm, and improvisation.
Acoustic Guitar: Fingerstyle, flatpicking, rhythm guitar, chord progressions, accompaniment, and traditional repertoire.
Double Bass: Fundamentals of technique, rhythm, intonation, and ensemble playing, with an emphasis on acoustic and traditional music.
Lessons can also incorporate music theory, ear training, composition, arranging, and improvisation according to your interests.
All Private Lessons Are Currently Virtual
For the time being, private lessons are offered exclusively online through Google Meet while we work out arrangements for returning to in-person instruction.
Virtual lessons offer several advantages. You can learn from the comfort of your own home, avoid travel time, and work with an instructor regardless of where you live.
All you need is your instrument, a reasonably quiet place to play, and a computer, tablet, or other device with a camera, microphone, and reliable internet connection.
You'll receive a Google Meet invitation for your scheduled lesson.
Lesson Availability
Private lessons are available Monday through Friday, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Eastern Time, subject to scheduling availability.
Choose the day and time that works best for you, and we'll do our best to accommodate your schedule.
What Will We Work On?
No two students are alike, and neither are their lessons. Instruction is tailored to your experience, musical interests, and the things you'd like to accomplish.
Beginning Students: Building a Foundation
If you've never played an instrument before, welcome! You don't need any previous musical experience to get started.
Beginning lessons focus on developing good habits, understanding your instrument, and discovering the enjoyment of making music.
We'll work on:
Becoming familiar with your instrument, its parts, tuning, and care.
Proper posture, hand position, and playing technique.
Developing coordination and a comfortable, relaxed approach to playing.
Understanding rhythm, timing, and basic musical notation.
Learning your first scales, chords, melodies, and simple tunes.
Developing listening skills and beginning to play by ear.
Establishing practical and enjoyable practice habits.
Building confidence through familiar songs and traditional repertoire.
We'll move at a pace that works for you. The goal isn't to rush through a method book. It's to build a foundation that will serve you for years to come.
Amateur and Intermediate Players: Finding Your Musical Voice
Perhaps you've been playing for a while. You know a handful of tunes, can manage some chords, and have developed a reasonable command of your instrument, but you're wondering where to go next.
This is often where music becomes especially rewarding.
At the intermediate level, we'll begin connecting technique with musical understanding, helping you move beyond simply playing the right notes.
Lessons may include:
Improving tone, timing, articulation, and technical fluency.
Expanding your repertoire across different musical styles.
Understanding chord progressions and how melodies relate to harmony.
Developing stronger rhythm and accompaniment skills.
Learning to play by ear and becoming less dependent on written music.
Exploring improvisation and variations on familiar melodies.
Understanding how to play with other musicians.
Preparing to participate in traditional music sessions and jam groups.
Developing greater confidence and independence as a musician.
One of my priorities is helping students become comfortable playing with other people. Music is a shared experience, and there's nothing quite like discovering that you can sit down with a group of musicians and contribute to the conversation.
Experienced Players: Going Further
Even musicians who have played for decades encounter new challenges, discover unfamiliar musical traditions, or find themselves wanting to approach their instrument differently.
Advanced instruction is less about following a predetermined curriculum and more about identifying what you want to accomplish.
Depending on your interests, we can explore:
Advanced instrumental technique and musical interpretation.
Improvisation, phrasing, ornamentation, and stylistic development.
Traditional repertoire and the characteristics of different musical traditions.
Advanced harmony, theory, and arranging.
Composition and developing original musical ideas.
Ensemble playing, musical communication, and leadership.
Refining tone, articulation, timing, and expression.
Preparing arrangements for performance or recording.
Exploring a second instrument or adapting skills from one instrument to another.
Experienced musicians are also welcome to bring specific projects, recordings, compositions, or technical challenges to their lessons.
Learning music never really ends. There's always another tune, another approach, or another musical idea worth exploring.
Private Students Also Receive Access to Our Virtual Group Classes!
Learning individually is important, but playing with other adults is an equally valuable part of becoming a musician.
That's why enrollment in private lessons automatically includes access to our virtual group class program, hosted through the Sweet Music Studio YouTube channel.
Our weekly group classes begin at 5:00 PM Eastern Time:
| Day | Group Class |
|---|---|
| Monday | Mandolin |
| Wednesday | Klezmer |
| Thursday | Celtic |
| Friday | Bluegrass |
Group classes offer an opportunity to expand your repertoire, explore different musical traditions, develop listening skills, and learn alongside other adult musicians.
There is no separate group class registration required. Once you've enrolled and paid for private lessons, you're automatically signed up for the group program.
